Posting just to post. Seems pretty self-explanatory, right? Good, then I can just get right into why it is the beginning of the end for blogs.
3 nights ago I was laying in my bed at around 4 am in a half-sleep stupor when I came across the idea of writing about how pulling all nighters just to finish posts does not really result in more traffic because, more than likely, that post you made while you were zombified is shit and full of problems, or worse, lacking substance.
Do you see the problem with that thought process? It’s not the idea of posts being shit and lacking substance, it’s the idea that bloggers pull all-nighters to write posts. I guess it has not been summer long enough because my mind still is thinking “deadline? time for an all-nighter.”
Looking back on my post idea today leads me to discuss another issue – Posting just to post.
Everywhere online people are instructed to post everyday on their blogs to make sure that visitors want to come back. People are made to believe that having the most posts leads to having the most visitors.
There are 2 problems with this that I have:
- Anyone who believes that a blog is measured by the amount of posts rather than the quality is not producing a good blog, nor will they ever because they simply don’t understand that post frequency matters, but not nearly as much as post quality.
- Anyone who is just blogging to build traffic probably does not have enough passion, or even intelligence, about their blog topic to even be able to write quality posts.
For my sanity’s sake, please be smart about blogging. There are enough GOOD sources out there that can explain the benefits of writing quality over quantity, and even explain the potentially bad things that could happen. For example, every time you post on your blog you ping multiple search engines and websites by default (thank you Wordpress) and sometimes when you ping too much the websites and search engines think your website is spam and you get tossed from the search results.
Use your head. If you have something to say then say it, but if you don’t then leave your site alone.
